Does Tailwynd require an account?
No. There is no account, no sign-up, and no tracking. Everything works on your phone.
Why do I type my battery percent instead of connecting my car?
By design. Car-account integrations are brand-specific, often unreliable, and would mean your vehicle credentials pass through someone's cloud. Typing the dash percent takes three seconds, works with every EV brand identically, and keeps your car data out of everyone's hands — including ours.
How accurate is it?
The model is real physics — aerodynamics with crosswind drag, terrain with regen, climate load — validated on multiple 900+ mile instrumented road trips; on a typical highway leg the range prediction lands within a few percent. And it improves: log your arrival charge after drives and Tailwynd calibrates itself to your specific car.
What does "will use about 199 mi of your range" mean?
It is the trip's cost expressed on your dash's own scale: this drive will consume as much battery as about 199 calm, flat miles would. If your range meter shows less than that, plan a charging stop — the app will tell you this too.
How do I get the live trip card?
Plan a trip, then tap the navigation button to hand off to Apple Maps. The card appears on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and shows up on CarPlay automatically. It updates about every half minute and refreshes the weather every 15 minutes.
What are the wind-shift alerts?
While you drive, each 15-minute forecast refresh is compared with the last one. If the trip's expected range use moves meaningfully, the card lights up and tells you plainly — "Winds save 21 mi of range" (green) or "Winds cost 9 mi extra range" (red). If it stays quiet, the outlook is steady.
What is the little terrain graph on the card?
The next 30 miles of road elevation, so a long climb or descent never surprises you. Red marks on the terrain are severe-weather positions — the storm drawn on the exact hill where you'll meet it.
Why does it sometimes say "storm outflow — winds variable"?
Because near an active thunderstorm, wind direction genuinely cannot be forecast — storm outflow can swing the wind around the whole compass in an hour. Tailwynd tells you the honest truth (strong, variable) instead of a confidently wrong arrow.
Do the severe-weather alerts work outside the United States?
The official alert feed (flash floods, severe thunderstorm and winter storm warnings) is U.S. only. Everywhere in the world, Tailwynd still screens the forecast itself for snow, freezing rain, fog, low visibility, icy temperatures, and dangerous gusts — and weather, elevation, and routing coverage is global.
How does the app learn my car?
After a drive, log your arrival battery percent in the trip report. Tailwynd compares the energy you really used against what it predicted and folds the difference into a per-vehicle calibration. Your next predictions — arrival percent, charger reach — lean on what your actual car does, not just the category average.
Which EVs does it support?
All of them. Pick your body style — sedan, SUV, pickup, van — and set your battery's usable capacity once (vehicle menu → Battery capacity). Nothing in the app is tied to any brand.
Will the live card drain my phone battery?
Location runs only while a drive you started is in progress, and stops on arrival. Outside of drives, Tailwynd uses location only to plan routes.
What languages and units does it speak?
English, Spanish, German, French, and Simplified Chinese; miles/°F or km/°C, switchable anytime and defaulting to your region.
Where is my trip data stored?
On your phone, and nowhere else. You can share a trip as a report image or text export whenever you choose. See the Privacy Policy.
